Attendees of the annual North Carolina Victim Assistance Network Conference will learn about the key elements to responding to mass victimization from keynote speaker, Attorney Michelle S. Cruz and her presentation, “Victim Services and Needs in Mass Tragedies.” In our time we have seen numerous mass tragedies occur, in our cities, in our schools, movie theaters, they can happen anywhere at any time, killing and injuring hundreds or thousands very quickly.  How we respond to the needs of the victims in these catastrophes is paramount to their healing and ability to overcome the trauma endured. Victims’ Rights Prevail in Connecticut Due to Voices Being Heard

Big things happen when the squeaky wheel is greased, and from unlikely sources. During the unexpected experience of a parole board hearing, Donna Gore aka “LadyJustice” and her family found themselves facing circumstances that were unwanted and unplanned. 34 years after losing their beloved husband and father, the murderer was up for parole, able to do so because of “good time” served. Sometimes it’s the little things that make big differences to the comfort level of a victim of crime.  One of the things that the Gore family did not want known to the person convicted of murdering their loved one was their identities at the parole hearing.  A crime victim should not have to ask what rights are available to them, however, in the course of criminal history, many victims don’t know what rights to ask for or who to question. Former Connecticut State Victim Advocate, now a private attorney, Michelle S. Cruz was retained by the family to offer legal representation and advocacy during the short preparatory period before the parole hearing which was …

Whether it be a murder, suicide, missing person, or just a spree of evil laid out upon the world, the news and the court systems are full of crime of every kind. The general public sits on their comfy sofas and recliners in the living rooms of America taking it all in, sometimes shedding a tear for that poor family that has endured a newsworthy tragedy.
