With the inception of The Innocence Project, founded in 1992 by Attorneys Barry Scheck and Peter Neufeld in conjunction with the Cardoza School of Law at Yeshiva University in New York City, the wrongfully incarcerated are finding there is someone on their side. The convicted person may not have been the most upstanding citizen at the time of the trial and sentencing, but, it’s judicially wrong to convict based on past history or character. In many cases the evidence may have been circumstantial, or not able to be put through technology that exists today, thus the backlog of cases sitting on the desks of District Attorneys across the country. How does a true crime author win the coveted “Defender of the Innocents” award?  Diane Fanning recently accepted this award, presented by the Innocence Project, and the woman whom she aided in being released from prison, wrongfully convicted of murdering her own son.  The case of Julie Rea, and the death of her son, Joel, was recounted in Fanning’s book, “Through the Window” and is being presented by the popular show on Investigation Discovery, “On the Case with Paula Zahn.” When Innocence is Not Enough (From Women In Crime Ink) “If your child were murdered and you were charged with committing that homicide but you knew you were not the perpetrator, how do you cope with knowing that your innocence simply was not enough to pull you out of the vortex of a criminal justice system operating in an alternative reality?
