Jillian Maas Backman and Simran Singh at the Oak Creek, Wisconsin Sikh Temple

Saturday, October 19 Jillian Maas Backman facilitated Simran Singh’s “Rebel Road Tour” stop at the Sikh Temple in Oak Creek, Wisconsin to participate in a panel discussion of the topic, Oneness: From Darkness to Light. Simran Singh’s Rebel Road Tour is for the purpose of connecting life dots from what was to what is, celebrating the human experience walking towards the expression of universal light. Jillian Maas Backman’s relationship with the Oak Creek Sikh community has deepened over the years since she first became a student, taking her “Journey to the East” as explained in Chapter 10 of her book, Beyond the Pews. It was a great shock to Jillian, and to the nation, when on August 5, 2012 the Oak Creek Sikh Temple made national news when several members lost their lives due to a shooting. Sex + Money Documentary Coming to Myrtle Beach November 3

Coming to Myrtle Beach November 3 Coastal Carolina University on November 3 from 6:30 to 9:00, in the Wall College of Business Auditorium. In 2007, a group of student photojournalists embarked on a journey through 20+ nations on every inhabitable continent, motivated by their love for photography and their passion for justice. At the outset, their experiences seemed diverse, even random. However, a common thread of human suffering would soon emerge as their travels exposed them to a dark, seldom discussed side of humanity– children being bought and sold to satisfy the sexual pleasures of other humans. Upon returning to the United States the students produced a book called Sex+Money: A Global Search for Human Worth. This collection of photographs and stories explores the realities of human trafficking and offers readers a global perspective on the consequences of abusing two of the most powerful forces in the world: sex and money. The Facts: (from NCDAV) “16,800 homicides (that are reported) attributed to intimate partner homicide per year, 2.2 million medically treated injuries costing $37 BILLION per year. The cost of intimate partner violence exceeds $5.8 billion dollars each year; $4.1 billion of which is for medical and mental health services.” Almost one-third of female homicide victims that are reported in police records are killed by an intimate partner. Intimate partner violence results in more than 18.5 million mental health care visits each year.
