Victim Impact Statement Assistance with Donna R. Gore

  One of the remaining avenues for crime victims to have a voice within the courts is through victim impact statements. Victim impact statements are usually read after trial as a way to get into the record the impact of the crime on the victims along with their friends and families. Donna R. Gore , “LadyJustice,” has first hand experience with the reality of preparing a victim impact statement when her father was murdered and the killer was convicted. She writes on her site: In 1987, Ladyjustice’s victim impact statement would not have won the Pulitzer Prize for journalism….But, it was from the heart.  Looking back now, LJ could have crafted something different…if the emotions hadn’t gotten in the way.  And that is the point.  Having emotions interjected into the narrative and/or verbal presentation is a double-edged sword…  On the one hand, the judge, the attorneys, the defendant and the families need to hear the emotion to understand and to validate the tremendously negative changes in their quality of life and the realities of the situation …

Headquartered in Cincinnati, Ohio there are state chapters in several other states across the country which hold monthly meetings, provide support, advocacy and court accompaniment. Many POMC Chapters publish their own newsletters and have designed and implemented special programs to meet the needs of survivors in their area. LadyJustice Speaks to Connecticut Law Class

Donna R. Gore was graciously invited to make a presentation to the University of Connecticut Law class of Attorney Michelle S. Cruz on October 22, 2013. As students of the law, what better way to learn than to hear first hand accounts of experiences in the judicial system presenting the pitfalls surrounding a particular case. LadyJustice began with an introduction to her medical survivorship, something which no doubt prepared her spirit for the obstacles which lay ahead in her life. She then explained the homicide of her father, a pivotal moment in time which caused her to draw upon her innate strength and attitude to continue, bringing her to where she is today, a seeker of justice, not only for herself and her immediate family, but for others who have walked the same path. She described for the class the circumstances leading to her father’s murder and the dynamics of her family’s diverse coping skills.
