Powerful Promoters: SHARPIE Wins the Prize!

We accidentally ran across a post by Sharpie on Twitter….or, perhaps it wasn’t by accident, but by design!  You see, Sharpie was using a “promoted by” tweet which shows up at the top of the Twitter stream on Hootsuite. Of course, this drew our interest and led us to a post on their company’s blog.  An ingenious peek at the power of Sharpie! Much to the reader’s delight, the site is a colorful, a well designed space that is much more than eye catching and appeals positively to the senses.  The article was amazing; the use of Sharpies to design the Harley belonging to the president of the company, Ben Gadbois. The Sharpie blog is a compendium of posts “sharing the amazing stuff people do with Sharpies.”  Everything from Gadbois’ beloved and decorated Harley to beautiful artwork creations on paper coffee cups! The Sharpie blog consistently showcases its ads with the tagline “It Starts With Sharpie.”  Each ad features one of the creations from a myriad of talented Sharpie artists.  One of our personal favorites is …

Jillian Maas Backman Answers to the Naked Golfers of Bethany College

On Friday, August 26, Jillian Maas Backman will be giving the keynote at the Bethany College Convocation Ceremony, as well as launching her new book, BEYOND THE PEWS.  The big news of the day is the suspension of the Golf Team for showing it all and putting it up on Facebook.   Faced with the opinions on both sides, those for the suspension, and those opposing it, we asked Jillian how she feels about sharing the publicity of her book launch with the “naked golf guys!”  The rest of the story is located at the link:  http://www.fox4kc.com/news/wdaf-college-golfers-in-hot-water-over-naked-team-pic-20110823,0,2139560.story How do you feel about the naked golf team “exposing” their picture on Facebook? Like everyone else, my first reaction was a great big WOW!  My second thought, as usual, I am right in the middle of the drama!  The story of my life……….and I love it!!! I had just completed the final additions on my well -crafted Convocation speech for Friday and God shakes it up for all involved.  Students, faculty, parents and Bethany College. These students …

What is Chiari? How Can You Help? Conquer Chiari Walk Across America

If you think it’s the name of a fine wine, think again.   I needed to ‘google’ Chiari to find out all of the details of a condition that is affecting many people, especially one who became my friend through the internet.   Stephanie was a vibrant EMT worker, as well as a devoted search and rescue person.  She helped coordinate and participated in searches for high profile missing persons, including Stacy Peterson.  Stephanie was always the positive “go-getter” in online forums discussing missing persons cases, and has a heart as big as Texas. Stephanie was diagnosed with Chiari.  What a shock to the online community she became close to.  She had to have surgery which left a zipper like scar from the base of her neck up the back of her head, and she still lives with the pain this condition produces. Stephanie, as well as others, has had to make large adjustments in her every day life as a wife and mother.  But, in true Stephanie style, she rallies and stays positive.  She …

Making Your Google+ Profile Work For YOU

Have you been wondering what is all  the buzz about Google+ ? Will it outshine Facebook and Twitter?  Do I have to learn something new to fit in?  Are all my friends going to migrate there? With tons and tons of online platforms already in existence, why do we need another one? We’ve found the simplicity of Google+ to be a great advantage, as well as the opportunity to categorize the many connections you make online.  Yes, you can do it with Facebook and Twitter as well, but with the drop and drag circles, it’s so much easier! Control over content is the best around, in our opinion.  You make the decisions about whom you wish to read what you post, as well as what you wish to read, and with whom you want to interact.  By going from circle to circle, you see what those specific members are posting and commenting on, while  filtering the “noise”  and personal updates you won’t see on the same level with Facebook or Twitter. Using Google+ Profile as Your …

You Can Only Have 150 Facebook Friends (*that you will know*)

Respectfully reprinted from NPR According to “Dunbar’s Number,” human beings can maintain a network of only about 150 close friends. GORE-TEX, the company that makes wetsuits, hiking boots and ponchos, is the subject of a famous anecdote in the world of sociology. It centers on the guy who founded the company, Bill Gore. “When Bill Gore set the company up, he set it up in his backyard,” Robin Dunbar, a professor of evolutionary anthropology at the University of Oxford, tells NPR’s Rachel Martin. From its modest beginnings, GORE-TEX grew and grew, Dunbar says, until Gore opened up a large factory. That, too, continued to grow. Then one day, Dunbar says, Gore walked into his factory. “And he simply didn’t know who everybody was.” Gore wondered why this was. “It was his gut instinct,” Dunbar says, “that the bigger a company got, people working for the company were much less likely to work hard and help each other out.” Gore did some counting, and realized that after putting about 150 people in the same building, things …
