Shattered Lives: Campus Safety

  Going away to college is a time in a young persons’ life that should be about discovery, learning, and making lifelong friends. However, as parents send their children away from home, some for the very first time, there is even more to be anxious about, especially their safety on campus. According to the Justice Department, “1 in 5 women will be a victim of rape or attempted rape.” When these incidents occur on campus property they are in the jurisdiction of campus police, and many victims do not report, or are discouraged to report by school administrators. With sexual assaults, active shooters, and luring into human trafficking from our college campuses, the college experience has changed. Guest for the hour on Shattered Lives Radio S. The Susan Murphy Milano Show, “Time’s Up!” Thursdays at 2pm ET Listen LIVE at: Here Women Talk Special Re-Broadcast with Liz Seccuro, Author of Crash Into Me As a 17 year old student at the University of Virginia, justice was no doubt the last thing in Liz Seccuro’s mind.  However, that quickly changed when she became a victim of rape in a fraternity bedroom.  Liz and her parents contacted local authorities, as well as campus authorities, she was examined at a local hospital,  all the proper reports were made, and yet, with jurisdiction questions and the Dean of Students and the University doing nothing in her behalf, it went no further. Seccuro graduated and went on to get married and start a family when, out of the blue, her attacker made contact with her.  In an effort to complete an AA 12 step program he apologized, but it only fueled Seccuro’s fears for her safety and the safety of her family, and after 21 years, she filed charges.   Liz Seccuro forced herself through panic and anxiety to …
