TRAFFICKED Designs Jewelry Workshop at New Braunfels Art League

On Monday, October 14 TRAFFICKED Designs joins with jewelry maker Lynda Medore to provide a jewelry making workshop for the benefit of victims of human trafficking at New Braunfels Art League at 239 W San Antonio St from 1pm-4pm. There is a fee of $10 charge to cover supplies for two bracelets (one to make and one to donate) for each student. The class is free to trafficking victims. Supplies for the bracelets will be provided for each student. Students need to bring basic jewelry pliers and metal cutters. Workshop leader, Lynda Medore will be assisted by fellow Art League member, Brian Moreland. To enroll in the class, please call Lynda Medore at (830)358-0186. (Class size is limited to 12 students) The design of the bracelet symbolizes the chains, with the lock and key of enslavement, and the braided faux leather inset represents the Silver Braid Organization which assists survivors of the sex industry. The Silver Braid is a symbol of reintegration and spiritual healing, for both the survivor and the community. Dottie Laster Speaks to Students of The John Cooper School About Human Trafficking

Thursday, April 11, Dottie Laster will be the guest speaker for the Junior Statesmen of America, a nationwide political debate and awareness club, at the John Cooper School in Woodlands, Texas. The Junior Statesmen of America are divided into states, regions, and school chapters. There are conventions held during the school year, which bring all of the chapters together to debate current issues and hear speakers. It is run almost entirely by students. The John Cooper School sponsors are Anita Pilling (10th grade ancient world history) and Peter Perretti (economics, AP US history). The John Cooper School is an independent, non-sectarian, co-educational, college preparatory day school. The Cantinera Private Screening at Sam Houston State

  The Student Health Center at Sam Houston State University will welcome Ruth Villatoro, producer of The Cantinera Documentary, and Dottie Laster, a victim advocate, on Wednesday, Feb. 20, to discuss the film. The film screening and discussion will be from 5 to 7 p.m. in the Criminal Justice Center’s Killinger Auditorium. The Cantinera exposes a niche of human trafficking in the United States where latin women drink and prostitute themselves for a living in latin bars or cantinas by means of force, fraud or coercion. Through the story of three women, the film navigates through the virtually unheard of subject from the perspective of a cantinera, an advocate and a vigilante. The film travels into the cantinas where women drink up to 40 beers a night, five nights a week.  An upclose look identifies the strategies of traffickers who stage their operations so the victims look like the perpetrators and the cantina a legitimate business. Dottie Laster Speaks to Girls of Destine

Girls of Destine Director, Lisa Blakes, has invited Dottie Laster to speak at the regular meeting on Saturday, February 16 about human trafficking. The mentorship program is designed to minister to the needs of young ladies ages 10-17, an age group that many traffickers prey upon, and assist them to becoming responsible teens guided into healthy relationships with others. Through a complete understanding of human trafficking it’s hoped that the young girls in attendance will come a way with the information needed to prevent themselves, and their peers, from being lured into the hands of those who are out to harm them. By learning to recognize the warning signs and red flags that most traffickers exhibit, the girls will be informed at their level of understanding and learn to make wise decisions if ever confronted. World Affairs Council of Houston Hosts Dottie Laster for Human Trafficking Workshop

The World Affairs Council of Houston has invited Dottie Laster of Laster Global Consulting and Bernardo Kohler Center to present her educational workshop on human trafficking at the Global Perspectives Workshop for Educators on Saturday, January 26, 2013. The event will be from 8:30am-3:30pm Central time and held at the World Affairs Council of Houston Office, 2500 East TC Jester, Suite 350, Houston, Texas. Along with Dottie Laster, other expert speakers include Jeronimo Cortina, Assistant Professor in the Department of Political Science and a Research Associate at the Hobby Center for Public Policy at the University of Houston, and Deborah Hubbs, General Counsel and Business Development Manager for GeoSouthern Energy Corporation in The Woodlands, Texas. The day-long professional development workshop is geared towards Houston area high school teachers and they will receive classroom-ready information on the economic, political, and cultural issues of human trafficking, both nationally and globally.
