What is Chiari? How Can You Help? Conquer Chiari Walk Across America

If you think it’s the name of a fine wine, think again.   I needed to ‘google’ Chiari to find out all of the details of a condition that is affecting many people, especially one who became my friend through the internet.   Stephanie was a vibrant EMT worker, as well as a devoted search and rescue person.  She helped coordinate and participated in searches for high profile missing persons, including Stacy Peterson.  Stephanie was always the positive “go-getter” in online forums discussing missing persons cases, and has a heart as big as Texas. Stephanie was diagnosed with Chiari.  What a shock to the online community she became close to.  She had to have surgery which left a zipper like scar from the base of her neck up the back of her head, and she still lives with the pain this condition produces. Stephanie, as well as others, has had to make large adjustments in her every day life as a wife and mother.  But, in true Stephanie style, she rallies and stays positive.  She …

Dawn Schiller Continues to Spread the Word for Throwaway Teens

A recent trip to Bangor, Maine brought education and awareness to audiences from Dawn Schiller, Founder of E.S.T.E.A.M., an organization formed to assist teens on the streets to prepare themselves for a better adulthood. Schiller spoke at The Shaw House, a facility which is a shelter, education center and transitional housing for teens who have nowhere else to call home.  Expounding on her own story of a dysfunctional childhood which left her in an abusive relationship with a 32 year old man, addicted to drugs and alcohol, and trafficked on the streets of Las Angeles, Dawn continues to show that there is hope beyond what seems to be a bleak outcome. Dawn presented a 2 hour workshop at both The Shaw House and the Mountainview Correctional Facility, giving direction to teens and raising the awareness of the consequences of abuses and neglect in families across the country.  She gives an inside view of what it’s like to be a throwaway teen and how communities can unite to assist them through mentoring and programs. Schiller then …

April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month   Research shows that approximately “1 in 6 men have experienced unwanted or abusive sexual experiences before age 16″. Would you know what to do, how to react, if a man or young male you care for confessed to being sexually assaulted or victimized? 1 in 6 is an organization that is providing resources, support and understanding for this issue. They are also shedding light on the myths that permeates society and often keeps males survivors suffering in shame and in the darkness. With a motto of “INFO, OPTIONS, HOPE”, 1 in 6 is responding to the needs of these men and those that care about them. Tune in Tuesday, April 5th at 9 PM Eastern, 6pm Pacific to www.party934.com, 94.9 FM HudsonValley, NY to hear Steve, executive director of 1in6.org and learn more about the help for male survivors and all survivors of …
