The Opioid Crisis: ImaginePublicity on Air 3 Part Series

ImaginePublicity, Jillian Maas Backman, and the FBI Columbia, SC Citizens Academy Alumni Association have collaborated on the following 3-Part Podcast about Opioid Addiction and its human trafficking intersect. The opioid epidemic has complicated and exacerbated the sex trafficking crisis in a number of profound ways: it has increasingly given traffickers a powerful tool to recruit and control victims, it compounds the recovery struggle for survivors, and it taxes the resources of the justice system. At the national level, the Department of Health and Human Services has recognized both human trafficking and opioid addiction as major public health issues; earlier this year, the department’s Office on Trafficking in Persons (OTIP) held a seminar to discuss the intersection between the two crises. The more we know, the more likely we will we able to put an end to addiction and its horrendous impacts: death by overdose, and human trafficking trade in drugs. Guest host, Jillian Maas Backman (JillianMaasBackman.Com) moderates the three-part discussion about the opioid crisis and the serious toll it’s taking on our society. The series presents the …

Medicine's Alternatives are not Always "Alternative" Medicine

Medicine’s Alternatives are Not Always “Alternative” Medicine

When the term “alternative” medicine is used it seems to conjure up the expectation that it’s a medical practice that isn’t “real.” The alternatives to conventional medicine are quite real, and most have been used for thousands of years with good results, whether it be herbs, tinctures, or protocols divergent from mainstream medicine, there has been a negative connotation to the results which science can not always explain. New Age, Homeopathy, Herbalism, Complimentary, and Holistic are some of the terms given to describe alternative practices used for healing purposes. Are they real, and more importantly, do they work? In a Washington Post article it’s said, “…there’s no such thing as alternative medicine. If clinical trials show that a therapy works, it’s good medicine. And if a therapy doesn’t work, then it’s not an alternative.” So what does it all mean for the average patient seeking to maintain good health or to manage an illness or disease? It means there are personal choices and options available, and each patient must take charge of their own alternatives, whether …

Addiction in doctors, AWAREmed, Dalal Akoury MD

Is Your Doctor an Addict?

Addiction comes in all varieties, drugs, alcohol, food, sex, work, and gambling, but one thing which gives us the wrong impression is that addicts are a “one size fits all” kind of person. What picture comes to mind when you think about an addict? A homeless street person, down and out and dirty looking feverishly for the next fix? Nothing could be further from the truth, and an addict may even be your trusted family doctor who is abusing prescription drugs. The truth is that addicts, just like addictions, come from all walks of life. Addiction knows no socio-economic background, and is oftentimes thought of as a victimless crime where the addict is the only victim. We don’t like to think of the ripple affect that addiction has on others surrounding the addict, whether it be family, friends, or, in some instances, a whole community. When the community is being treated at the local doctor’s office, we expect a certain amount of knowledge and trust to be available to all patients from the staff of …

Dr. Dalal Akoury, Addiction discussion forums

ADDICTION: A ‘Meeting’ of Minds Online Discussion with Dalal Akoury, MD

Participating in one of the many online and anonymous forums, message boards and blogs that discuss addiction and the ancillary medical conditions that accompany it are highly valuable tools for the addict and family members. An added bonus to the daily give-and-take of empathy, compassion and feeling that one is not alone, are the, resources, research and informational articles that members share in their postings. As we know, addiction is not a typically ‘friendly’ condition; that is it is not a popular topic. Therefore ‘friending’ someone via the internet based solely on addiction may not be the best first step. But being able to open up namelessly via other communication options on the web offers huge opportunities for help and healing. Since addiction is a societal problem, it is best when those of us affected by it know of at least one place we can visit during our own private time and share our experiences. If we’re not ready to share, we read and learn – also known as lurking – but a perfectly acceptable way to …
