5 Easy Pieces: Throw Away Your Power Point!

Ok, don’t throw Power Point out all together, but make the effort to use the platform to it’s best advantage! You know those presentations, the ones where the lights are dimmed and someone is standing behind a podium, droning in monotone about something, you’re not quite sure because you were lost at the first slide. Snooze fest! Since the dawn of computers and the discovery of a way to dress up a speech or presentation using a more sophisticated method than an old time slide show or 8mm film to get the message to the masses, there is a tendency to be “over creative.” (just like this looong sentence!) Attending conferences, or corporate meetings, it’s easy to see who knows their stuff and who’s relying too heavily on displaying their research of someone else’s knowledge. So, how do we find a way to be knowledgeable and entertaining while presenting important concepts, and keep the audience awake? 1. Editing a Power Point Presentation It’s ok to throw up a lot of ideas, facts, and wisdom in a …

5 Easy Pieces: The Spirit of Giving in a Social Media World

On 12-12-12 one of our clients, Jillian Maas Backman, left a cryptic little note on Facebook  telling us to respect the posts on her page of others, and that she was tired of self-promotion. After being a little dumbfounded and confused we found out what she was really up to! Listening to her intuition and receiving guidance is only one of Jillian’s many talents;  she’s also an award-winning radio host and the author of a best-selling book, Beyond the Pews.  So when the ideal vibrational forces aligned on 12-12-12 she presented her gift to the world of social media, a whole day of sacrificing her own promotional time to only promote her friends, their businesses and endeavors. What a great surprise! The reciprocal part was that it also allowed her to engage on a deeper level by opening up the opportunity to others. Imagine the flurry of excitement when bloggers found their hits soaring, and new people found their way into fresh territory. Facebook and Twitter were abuzz with the promotion of new blogs, ideas, bands …

As many readers already know, Ricki Lake is scheduled to launch a new talk show this fall and we’ve seen the buzz building and building across all of the major social media networks. On more than one occasion we’ve remarked about the fact that this is social media done right! So, what are they doing to gain such a following of devoted fans? Like all good social media marketing plans, there is a definite strategy.  As outside observers, and sometimes participants, we’ve seen sharing, blogging and strategic placement of information on numerous platforms, a plan that works. 1. Build it, They Will Come Friends of Ricki is a community of diverse people forming an “inner circle” and communicating about all things Ricki Lake.  They are the club, or tribe, relating what’s happening behind the scenes of the new Ricki Lake show.  The friends procure ideas, guest suggestions, and topics of discussion from the fan base and with interaction among Team Ricki members. By blogging on several platforms, including Huffington Post and BlogHer, they are in a position …

5 Easy Pieces: Learning the Hard Way, Losing Your Domain

Yes, it happened. A renewal date came up, was missed and before you know it, when attempting to pay the renewal we find out the domain was put up for auction and purchased by someone else. Now what!? Facing the situation professionally was hard and embarrassing, my head hit the brick wall several, painful times before I sucked it up and started hunting for ways to remedy the situation. (found that security giant Checkpoint did the same thing)  Luckily, and I highly recommend everyone do this, I had purchased a back-up domain name so the site did not go down completely.  But, it was an unnecessary, time-killing task that was not on my already busy to-do list. Why would anyone else finding a domain want a domain name with someone else’s name?  Well, if you, as a marketer and branding consultant have done a good job, that domain name has real value, especially to online “speculators.”  Just like house flipping in the real estate market, domain names are online real estate and speculators love to …
