Set for a January, 2016 release, readers and fans will find Bitter Remains to be another of Fanning’s fascinating true crime page-turners.

Bitter Remains is the account of 27-year-old Laura Jean Ackerman of Kinston, North Carolina who was last seen alive in Raleigh, NC on July 13, 2011.

The mother of two toddlers under the age of 4, Ackerman was on her way to pick up her children for their scheduled weekend visit from ex-boyfriend and their father, Grant Hayes, who had custody. What transpires over the following weeks, from North Carolina to Texas, will have readers wondering how such evil deeds can be inflicted on another human being, let alone the mother of your children.

Fanning takes readers through the roller coaster relationships of ex-boyfriend, new wife, custody issues, children and the dysfunctions seen all too often in family court decisions. Bitter Remains shows how deep relational bitterness can run, and to what lengths people will go when feeling trapped. Through two separate trials, Grant Hayes and his wife Amanda each point the finger at the other for the gruesome murder of Laura Ackerman.

This is the hauntingly true story of a devoted mother, a disturbed couple, and how these horrific events came to pass…

Bitter Remains is Diane Fanning’s 14th true crime book.  Her previous true crime books delve into several high-profile cases including Caylee Anthony (Mommy’s Little Girl) and Michael Peterson (Written in Blood). The evidence she uncovered while writing about a serial killer (Through the Window) led to the exoneration of a mother wrongly convicted of murdering her son, and earned Fanning the Defender of the Innocent Award.
