“To make a living, or to make a life?” was the question burning through the mind of F. Mark Granato for years.   Everything an author, new or published, needs to learn will be presented at the annual Roanoke Regional Writers Conference January 23-24, 2015 held at Hollins University’s Richard Wetherill Visual Arts Center. Twenty four classes will be offered and taught by as many well-known regional writers, including Diane Fanning. Topics will range from writing a memorable obituary, a three-class set on true crime, the query letter, journalistic ethics, writers groups, storytelling, building a resume, interview techniques, writing a journal, the writer’s voice, critical thinking, writing about sex, marketing, opinion writing, ghost writing and breaking writers block. Notable writers include Keith Ferrell, Roland Lazenby, Diane Fanning, Ed Falco, Rod Belcher, Andrea Burnais and Neil Sagebiel. Two keynote addresses will be presented, Roland Lazenby and Keith Ferrell will talk about “The Future of the Book” and the second by respected journalist Anne Adams. Human Trafficking Awareness Month Event at New Braunfels Library Hosts Dottie Laster

  Thursday, January 29, 2015 the New Braunfels, Texas Public Library, 700 E. Common St., will be hosting a presentation by Dottie Laster of Bernardo Kohler Center and Laster Global Consulting in honor of National Human Trafficking Awareness Month. The event is free and open to the public to attend and learn about the effects of modern-day slavery. Laster titles her presentation, “What Would Frederick Douglass Do?” based on the life work of the escaped slave and late 1800’s leader of the abolitionist movement, also Laster’s historical mentor. Reminding the audience of the struggles that Douglass was able to overcome, along with his accomplishments and successes, she sheds light on the condition of slavery, then and now. She will share her vision with the audience and not only encourage involvement, but demonstrate ways that everyone can contribute their talents.
