On Saturday, October 18, 2014 Jeff Mudgett will step into the spotlight of the TEDx Vancouver live event being held at the Queen Elizabeth Theater in Vancouver, BC.

Mudgett has created something a little “tilted” to comply with the theme of the TEDx Vancouver conference, TILT. His presentation will swear in the audience as a “Grand Jury” to interactively conclude a legal decision: if evidence he produces is enough to show probable cause and take his case to trial, something never done at TEDx.

What case? The possibility of the true identity of Jack the Ripper, none other than Mudgett’s great-great-grandfather, Herman Webster Mudgett, known in American criminal history as H. H. Holmes, architect of the Murder Castle in Chicago, IL and dubbed “America’s First Serial Killer.”

Mudgett’s book, BLOODSTAINS, tells the story of H. H. Holmes from a completely new angle, a personal history combined with methodical research into an ancestor no one would willingly claim. Herman Webster Mudgett was a swinder, a con man, a womanizer and, at his worst, H. H. Holmes, the most atrocious serial killer of all time.

From the official TEDx Vancouver website:

Jeff Mudgett was a sailor, lawyer in both California and Washington States and a tug and barge business entrepreneur. That is until one fateful night, when his Grandfather, at dinner, revealed to the family the horrible secret he’d kept to himself his entire life—Jeff’s Great Great Grandfather had been Dr. Herman Webster Mudgett. Better known as H.H. Holmes. The devil of the White City. The evil genius who murdered untold scores while operating the notorious Murder Castle in Chicago during the 1893 World’s Fair. Perhaps the singularly most evil man to ever live.TEDx Vancouver, Jeff Mudgett

Unable to continue with such a cloud hanging over his head, Jeff set his business life aside, instead dedicating himself to researching the infamous legend, spending every ounce of his being attempting to disprove the tale. Unfortunately, not only was the terrible story true, but Jeff’s research quickly revealed there was far more to the horror than had ever previously seen the light of day, including the discovery of credible evidence concerning the identity of Jack the Ripper. Instead of running away from this terrible legacy, Mr. Mudgett decided to tell the world.

TEDx Vancouver

TEDx Vancouver hosts the platform for “ideas worth spreading” from a combination of 18 minute (or less) talks from those invited to share their missions. The theme of the conference is TILT described as:

Tilt /tilt/ verb: a shift in perspective, an inclination and a change in favour.

It’s time to shift our perspectives. This year’s theme is TILT, a concept that will challenge the status-quo and alter engrained patterns of the human psyche.

When we push our comfort zones, we create the openness and space that is paramount to shifting perspective. The result? Triumph. Change. New outcomes for possibility.

TED is a nonprofit devoted to spreading ideas, usually in the form of short, powerful talks (18 minutes or less). TED began in 1984 as a conference where Technology, Entertainment and Design converged, and today covers almost all topics — from science to business to global issues — in more than 100 languages. Meanwhile, independently run TEDx events help share ideas in communities around the world.
