As the mainstream media reports on the mass shooting at the Washington, DC Navy Yard, more information is becoming available about the suspected shooter, and the fact is being reported that he was “hearing voices in his head.”

In his hotel room, the voices used “some sort of microwave machine” to send vibrations through the ceiling and into his body, a police report shows him saying. He could not sleep….LA Times

We see among the spiritual trends that many times it’s advised to listen to the voices you hear in your head, they are always true and right, but are they? When do we listen and when do we not? Just because you may be receiving a negative message, should you believe them or act upon them?

In all major traditional religions we see written words that have come through prophets as the word of God, Allah, Buddah, or the Higher Power as messages that are passed down to believers.  How are these messages, or voices in the heads of the prophets, different?

The questions arise surrounding the trends of spiritual workers who teach us to listen to the voices, listen to our soul messages, they are always in truth, but where is the line drawn between real spiritual truth and the voices of untruth?

Just as there is always a natural balance between good and evil, logic tells us that at times that balance is tipped one way or another. So, can we truthfully listen to all the messages that come from the voices in our heads?

As in the case of the suspected shooter in the Navy Yard tragedy, we must ask, “what is out of balance?” In the alignment of spirit, mind and body true balance is found, but we must take a close look at the imbalances that occur in each individual. Is this individual’s spirit out of balance or closed off? Is this individual’s mind altered by drugs, alcohol, or chemicals? Is this individual’s body diseased or otherwise compromised?

Research in the mental health field show several reasons why people hear voices, some are soothing to the individual, and some are terrifying.

Researchers haven’t pinpointed the specific neural mechanisms at work, but brain scans show that areas of the brain that process sound and store memories appear more active during auditory hallucinations, as if previous experiences were being replayed…..Psychology Today

Jillian will discuss these questions and offer her insights on the show about listening to voices in my head, or “soul voices,” and how to discern what is real and what is not.
