Cancer strikes a chord of fear in the best of us, even the word is hard to say openly in most circles. It’s a personal relationship with the disease, its ravages, and its outcome that are affecting millions every year.

Amy Susan Crohn was a 36 years old wife and mother of two beautiful boys, one an adopted foster child, when she was struck with the reality of, not only stage IV cancer, but also a second life threatening disease, Lupus.  In her recently released book, Dying to Live: Running backwards through cancer, Lupus, and chronic illness, Amy relates her personal and up close journey through her medical emergencies and near death experience, as well as the connection of her illness to her dysfunctional family and childhood.

While recuperating Amy used her down time to research the subject of childhood maltreatment and its effect on adults with chronic illness. She discovered the Adverse Childhood Experience Study (ACES) and advocates that doctors become more aware of it as well as utilize the questionnaire to better understand their patients.

After her years of traditional medical treatments, Amy is currently exploring the world of integrative medicine with Dr. Dalal Akoury.  She is learning how to become the CEO of her own healthcare plan and has also created a “Dear Doctor” letter that can be adapted for any new patient to give to their doctor at intake.  (seen on page 97 in her book, Dying to Live available on Amazon, Barnes&Noble, and local bookstores, digitally on Kindle and Nook)
