With the tragic news of Saddleback Church pastor and best selling author, Rick Warren’s loss of his son to suicide, to the internet hoax of Joel Osteen of Lakewood Church denouncing Christianity, we are seeing the effects of the internet and instant news on church leaders and their families.
Coming off of her series about Preacher’s Daughters, Jillian Maas Backman and guest, Delilah Jones of ImaginePublicity, will talk about church leaders and how growing up in the midst of the church sometimes adds pressure to children in the spotlight.
Quoted in her book, Beyond the Pews: Breaking With Tradition and Letting go of Religious Lockdown, Jillian says:
“I am a direct descendant of what is sometimes called “American Spiritual Royalty.” The select group is comprised of preachers and their families. It’s an elite subculture of individuals chosen to help God’s people down the centuries’ worn trail toward human salvation.”
To those of us on the other side of the pulpit, looking to the church family for our own example of how to worship God and live our lives accordingly, are our expectations of these families beyond what they can humanly offer?
In the midst of Rick Warren’s grief he and his family are dealing with public, hateful comments. Living in the public eye is difficult, and grieving for a lost child can be devastating. Warren’s children, as most preacher’s kids, have had to grow up under the microscope of not only their home church, but the public at large, adding another layer of pressure to families already held to a higher standard.
