Saturday, January 19, 2013 is declared National Day of Service honoring the life and legacy of Martin Luther King, Jr. Started 4 years ago by President Obama, who believes that service should be a lifelong commitment—whether it’s at the school, community, city, state, or national level.
Where can you find opportunities within your community to volunteer? The topic of this week’s show is “finding your charity niche” with guest, Susan Reinholz, a long-standing volunteer at VOTK Valley of the Kings Sancuary and Retreat Center in Wisconsin, home to over 50 large cats and other animals that have been rescued.
Young people within every community learn by example, and what better example to set than the importance of giving back through volunteer work. We hope that everyone will take the time to mentor a young person and guide them into volunteering on National Day of Service and every day throughout the year.

I’m sure the concept of the National Day of Service was well intended… I would like to see it expanded to at least one day per quarter, particularly mandated for those with selfish hearts.Do we really need a President’s day(s) to satisfy union bosses who count holidays on the calendar and line their pockets insisting that government employees are more entitled than everyone else? .Or… simply to comply with a planned vacation? I’m certain that George, Abe and Martin Luther would highly approve of everyone relinquishing a few days a year to do something rewarding in the name of others versus what the majority do as a matter of routine. Yes, people do step up during mass tragedies…But…let’s make it a habit…. And for those of us who do it seven days a week…Keep it going! Embrace serving others in your own small way…Someone will appreciate it largely!
