Trying diligently to unlock the system within the United States Department of Justice and the FBI, Dottie Laster, who works with the Bernardo Kohler Center assisting victims of human trafficking, finds herself in a precarious situation. Working with Brandon Darby, a former FBI informant, Laster and Darby presented dozens of cases of human trafficking to the agencies, following all the necessary protocols set forth, only to meet resistance to investigate, or complete complacency.
Brandon Darby has written the full account of the experience in the latest edition of Town Hall Magazine, a monthly conservative news magazine, explaining in detail the shift in priorities within the FBI and his conclusions as to why human trafficking cases are being ignored.
Darby exposes problems which arise between law enforcement agencies and ICE (Immigration and Customs Enforcement) and how by ICE agents rolling into an ongoing investigation, critical evidence is often lost and traffickers walk free with little consequence because of it, causing law enforcement agencies to back away from needed investigations, thus perpetuating the cycle.
Darby goes on to explain the specific problems which arise when a victim of trafficking is expected to testify for the prosecution of the traffickers, and how he and Laster brainstormed ideas to find solutions to better help the victims she serves.
So why are the agencies who are supposed to investigate, prosecute, and protect in cases of human trafficking not properly reacting and investigating? Dottie Laster has been communicating up the ladder, all the way to the White House seeking answers, with none forthcoming.
In our nation human trafficking is only coming into the forefront as a hot issue, most of the public thinking it only happens in third world countries far away. Laws in each state are being enacted by grass-roots efforts in conjunction with interested legislators to strengthen the fight against trafficking and put the traffickers behind bars, but it’s an issue that is out of control and it may be difficult to catch up before our country has an even deeper problem.
In a recent article in the Washington Times, “Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has equated human trafficking to slavery and said it is likely that more men, women and children around the world are living as human trafficking victims “than at any point in history.” More than 27 million are living in slavery around the globe.

Wow Dottie! What a morass of bureaucratic BS according to the article! Competing instead of collaborating agencies… Lack of funds to feed the victims… Such lame excuses when researchers get monies to study the habits of mosquitoes ..or for some stupid pop culture thing we already knew was true! Where is the justice?
Perseverance plus is needed. But…. you already have that! I so respect what you are trying to accomplish! Keep on keepin’ on… You will find a way!
