Lisa Michels
Lisa Michels,
Veteran Trauma Memory Specialist
At an early age, Lisa Michels suffered sexual abuse at the hands of a family member, although she wasn’t fully aware the extent of the abuse until she was a participant in the Oprah show for Dr. Phil’s “Get Real Challenge” where there were other participants and other psychologists. During those 5 days repressed memories of the trauma began to surface for the first time.
There are a number of issues that make it difficult to prosecute a repressed memory case, and this is where Lisa’s mission begins. To speak out and tell her story in an effort to empower other survivors to tell their stories in order to begin the healing process (acknowledgement is the first step to healing), but also to understand that speaking out will accomplish a number of goals: change the culture of secrecy surrounding incest, have a greater impact on public policy in order to change the system that feeds the cycle of abuse from generation to generation, and be the catalyst of change within their own family that at first may be resented but ultimately will be the greatest gift one can give oneself and their entire family.
Lisa Michels is a recognized speaker for RAINN as well as a former board member of a nationally known organization representing issues of human trafficking.
Through education, advocacy and more survivors speaking out about their stories of childhood trauma memories Lisa is gaining attention for this epidemic cycle of abuse in order to make a real difference.
